How To Make Golden Milk

Golden Milk is a blend of turmeric and dairy-free milk, along with a pinch of pepper, cinnamon and honey.

GOLDEN MILK IS AN EXCELLENT DRINK FOR WINTER

When temperatures drop, there is nothing better than a healthy drink that heals and warms our body – in the form of Golden Milk. It's a vegan, paleo, dairy-free, and naturally sweetened beverage. Use coconut milk, cashew nut milk or almond milk for a creamy, delicious and soothing drink.

If you're familiar with Indian cuisine, chances are you already know turmeric spice as it's a staple ingredient in your curry dishes, but if you've never used turmeric in the kitchen and/or never tried making turmeric milk, this post is for you.

With its incredible healing and relaxing properties; this healthy vegan drink is just what you need; especially if you're like me; that feels very cold in these winter days here in the south of Brazil.

WHAT IS GOLDEN MILK – GOLDEN MILK?

Golden milk is a drink used for centuries by  Ayurveda (medicine developed in India more than five thousand years ago). Ayurvedic means "science of life" and its philosophy is integrated well-being, which values harmony between body, mind and soul. Therefore, it is from this philosophy and with this purpose that Golden Milk emerged, a milk drink (coconut or other plant milk), turmeric, and other spices.

Turmeric is a plant well known worldwide for its medicinal properties and its culinary use. It is also called Saffron , Saffron , Saffron , Saffron , mangarataia and Golden Ginger.

It is responsible for the yellowish color of the drink, it is a powerful food when it comes to fighting inflammation and, when associated with black pepper (included in this preparation), its power is increased by 300 times. In addition to this combination, it is also important that both are in a fat-soluble medium so that they are better absorbed by the body (for this reason the base is vegetable coconut milk – almonds, chestnuts, walnuts are also suitable, but add a little coconut oil).

THE BENEFITS OF GOLDEN MILK FOR HEALTH:

So, let's jump into the health benefits of golden milk. If you have an autoimmune disease, then you'll love Golden Milk for its anti-inflammatory properties.

Turmeric is one of Mother Nature's top healing compounds and studies have shown that curcumin; the active ingredient in turmeric; may improve certain autoimmune conditions by regulating inflammatory signals.

Turmeric is also a potent antioxidant. Therefore, it can fight free radicals and can even help ward off the common cold. All because it fights chronic inflammation that may otherwise be suppressing the immune system.

  • Here are some of the benefits of Golden Milk:
  • Helps minimize joint pain and reduce inflammation.
  • It fights various infections and boosts immunity due to its antibacterial properties.
  • It helps to have healthy and glowing skin.
  • Delays the onset of diabetes as the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of curcumin help to moderate insulin levels. In addition, it has also been a way to help increase the effect of medications that treat diabetes.
  • Protects the brain and improves memory functions in Alzheimer's patients, as studies show that curcumin can increase brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels. BDNF is a compound that helps your brain form new connections and promotes brain cell growth.
  • Controls heartburn and indigestion problems.

And here's the good news. You don't need to take Turmeric Longa supplements to get these health benefits, just drink the Golden Milk!

Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine has been prescribing turmeric milk for centuries. And the warm Golden Milk is calming and relaxing, similar to chamomile tea. Therefore, you can drink golden milk before bed to get a deeper night's sleep.

HOW TO MAKE GOLDEN MILK –GOLDEN MILK?

I like to use coconut milk to make golden milk, but you can also use almond milk or cashew nut milk. This is how you make golden milk:

  1. Pour  the milk into a small saucepan.
  2. Add some ground turmeric; a pinch of black pepper (which helps your body absorb curcumin); a pinch of cinnamon (another natural anti-inflammatory) and the sweetener of your choice.
  3. Bring to a boil over medium heat for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend. Enjoy!

Ingredient amounts are at the bottom of the page in the Recipe Card.

TIPS FOR THE GOLDEN MILK RECIPE – GOLDEN MILK :

  • Once you've made your Golden Milk once or twice, feel free to get creative. Sometimes I add ginger (another of my favorite spices).
  • When I use almond milk, I always add coconut oil. Coconut milk has some fat; so I omit the coconut oil when I'm using the coconut milk; but the fat is definitely needed to aid in the absorption of all the healing compounds. Another benefit of coconut oil (and come to think of it, maybe that's why you should be adding it anyway), is that it helps froth Golden Milk.
  • We should not consume more than one teaspoon of ground turmeric a day. And if you are using fresh turmeric, we should limit it to 1.5 to 3 grams per day. Otherwise, excessive use of turmeric can result in upset stomach, allergic reactions, risk of kidney stones, diarrhea and nausea. ATTENTION: Do not use any product without first consulting a doctor. Although turmeric is natural, its intake in inadequate amounts can cause damage to health and even impair the treatment of other diseases.
